Ranking

How monthly leaderboards work and how all-time rankings are tracked across months.

Every group has a monthly leaderboard that ranks members by active days in the current month. At the start of the next month, the board resets and a new race begins.

Active days

The leaderboard counts active days, not workouts. An active day is any calendar day where you logged at least one workout, run, sport or check-in.

The rules are simple:

  • Each calendar day counts at most once, no matter how many things you logged.
  • A workout you logged at 11:55 PM counts for that day. One you logged at 12:05 AM counts for the next day.
  • Imported workouts (from Apple Health or Health Connect) count the same as workouts logged directly in Sparta.

Whoever has the most active days at the end of the month wins that month.

Monthly reset

Boards reset at midnight on the 1st of each month, in your local time. The previous month’s standings become part of your group’s history. You can scroll back through past months in the leaderboard view.

You can’t navigate to a future month. The earliest month you can browse back to depends on your platform, but it goes well past most users’ join dates.

All-time ranking

Beyond the monthly board, Sparta keeps a count of how many times each member finished 1st, 2nd or 3rd across all months in the group.

This shows up as a small trophy record next to each member. It’s the closest thing to an all-time leaderboard. Consistent winners stand out, even if they don’t win every single month.

There’s no points system or weighting. Three 1st-place finishes counts as three 1st-place finishes, no matter when they happened.

Ties

If two members finish a month with the same number of active days, they share the position. Both get credit for the rank they tied on. This means a tie for 1st gives both members a 1st-place trophy.

What this rewards

The whole system is designed around showing up. A friend who works out for 20 minutes every day will out-rank a friend who does one massive lift on Saturday and nothing else. That’s the point.
